www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZHsG1jas6E A lot of you have asked me what Phil sounds like in 'real life'. It's been awhile since I've talked to him on the phone, but i'm 99% sure the narrator of this commercial is Phil. If it is, he lightened his voice just a bit for the commercial but otherwise it sounds like he does on the phone.

It does sound like Teddy, albeit like you said slightly higher pitched. That said...
*squeals*
That's my Teddy! The first one I owned! Thank you so much for finding this!

I remember the first time I saw that commercial. I had just come to the realization that Teddy Ruxpin and WoW were gone. I was channel-surfing one day, and this came on and I screamed out loud I was so excited. Shortly after, my family and I went shopping and I want to say we walked into Toys R Us or someplace like it and right at the door was a huge display of about 50 Playskool Teddys in their boxes. I walked right by them, but my brother pointed them out. I begged my mother to buy me one, but since the tapes weren't compatible with my WoW Teddy, she decided it wasn't a good investment. I only remember seeing this commercial once or twice, but I'll never forget that first time.

Oh man i remembered getting Teddy when i was 4 back in 1986 and it was one of my favorite toys back then besides He-Man and others.

For the tapes, perhaps. My first Teddy was a Playskool Teddy. He's one of the earliest Christmas presents I can remember getting. My parents had taken him, the book, and the tape out of the box during the night, so it was a very pleasant surprise seeing him sitting under the tree, as if he were waiting for me. So that was probably 1992, give or take a year or two.
Almost twenty years later, he still works. Yes his mouth doesn't move, but his voice and speakers still sound as clear as the day I got him. I'm pretty confident that he'll stay in good enough condition for me to pass him down to my kids.
*sigh*
That was a time when toys were built to last. Not like modern toys.

My first experience with Teddy was very similar. I don't "remember" anything because I was only a 1 1/2, but there's a videotape of Christmas morning, 1986, and I'm sitting in the middle of our old living room floor and looking around, and suddenly someone places this bear in front of me. At the time, we were the same size. Then they flick him on and he starts talking. He starts singing, and my eyes go wide.
"Hi, my name is Teddy Ruxpin. Can you and I be friends?"
And he just starts talking, and I'm sitting there with little to no idea of what is going on, but I'm mesmerized by this bear. He would grow to become one my best friends.
And I completely agree that while Teddy may have been on the expensive side, generally speaking, the quality of toys back then was vastly superior to the fragile plastic set-pieces children get today. I used to get better quality stuff out of a McDonald's Happy Meal than most kids get out of a $4.99 action figure at Toy R Us. Ridiculous.

Expensive, but they weren't lying when they claimed "a friend for life has come to life."

I got my first Teddy Ruxpin made by Worlds Of Wonder when Sears had a toy store. I got him for $100. there. Grubby cost little less then Teddy Ruxpin. Toys R Us start pop up in WA. The first one was in Southcenter Pkwy. Ka Be Toys (I think that's name toy store). Had them too. Also in 1985 I had the Laser Tag made by Worlds Of Wonder. I had the 2 Fobs, Teddy Ruxpin bed sheets, blanket. Teddy Ruxpin lunch box.

I remember that commercial!! *warm fuzzies* Thanks for posting it. My first Teddy was a Playskool one as well, kaylathehedgehog . I've gotten my hands on all the other iterations, but he's still my favorite.

A tie in to current events with the PlaySkool version... any California residents out there (I, myself am an aspiring California resident) note Meg Whitman is running to be your next Governor... while she was CEO of PlaySkool she greenlit the acquisition of Teddy.

Lol I wonder how many votes she'd get by using that as part of her campaign platform?

If she were running out here it'd be at least 1!

Lol well I might vote for her if she'd use her governership to give Teddy a leg up. Yay! Another Playskool owner! I'm not alone! The internets can be a very lonely place for Playskool owners.
