That's pretty neat. Around what time were they originally released?

1985. However, on the older tapes "1984" is written...

I found something interesting! Jabbee Bear was sold as "Storytelling Mr. Bear" too! I think this is common in similar toys to Teddy Ruxpin... For example, Gabby Bear and My Talking Bear, Lucky Bear and T.T Bear, Teddie Talkins and Tell Tale Teddy.. Same bear, but different name and tape! Attachments:

At least they had the decency to design their own font and box design instead of swiping Teddy's.

Yes.. But I don't think Jabbee/Mr. Bear himself looks like Teddy.. Of course, he was made because of Teddy. Not an original invention. But he doesn't look much like him. Obvious knockoffs are T.T Bear/Lucky Bear and Andy Brown. Here is Andy Brown. He is Mexican. He is very interesting, a copy of Yes! Teddy! There are many cheaper knockoffs of Teddy Ruxpin.. Some who just repeat your voice.. But are very cute! First one is "Eddie". He repeats your voice and plays music. Second is unknown.. I am not sure if he has cassette player mechanism.

Teddy's foreign cousins, perhaps?

Perhaps, haha!
I am very curious about Andy Brown. His cassette player is identical to Yes! Teddy. There was an eBay listing, where I saved this picture. In his tape, he tells the story of Snow White. The tapes look like Yes! Teddy, same design! I wonder if he will animate to Yes! Teddy tapes.. Or Teddy will animate to Andy Brown tape. The animation coding is very simple for this Teddy, something anyone can program. So I think it might be the same!
As usual, I wish this seller recorded a video... I could not buy this bear, because I found the listing when already expired.. It was right before I bought Funny bear... But maybe it's good! Because I would not know which one to buy... ^^; Perhaps I would have bought Andy instead, because he is more rare.. But Funny was destined to be with me! Haha
I think Andy Brown was made because Teddy Ruxpin was not released in Latin America. I have never seen a Spanish tape. AnimationFascination writes of Spanish tapes.. But I haven't seen it... There is an image, but it is broken. I think it was made only in beta, like the Cantonese tape.
So, if Teddy Ruxpin is so popular in USA, Mexico will want to imitate, because they are neighbors.
I wonder now, if there is a Mexican Teddy Ruxpin knockoff, then maybe there is also a Chinese one! In Chinese language! It would not be surprising.. I am excited! Haha
Maybe we will find it one day.

I have both Gabby Bear and an Eddie Bear. If any of you guys have questions, I'd be glad to answer any you may have. I also have all 10 of the books and tapes for Gabby aswell. Btw, Eddie's "music" that he plays is an extremely loud, obnoxious tune. Not sure exactly what it is though.

Kind of like the jingle Teddy plays at the start of his books?

I would love to see a video of Eddie, if you can upload a video online!

I found some interesting talking bears!
First, this one:
He looks just like Funny Bear/Teddie Talkins/Tell Tale Teddy! Except he is wearing a hat and his vest has Coca-Cola branding! I wonder if that was unlicensed... I also wonder, if he came with a tape, and what his box looked like... There is no doubt this is his original outfit, the vest is just like the one the other versions are wearing... He is a mystery! I wonder how many different names this same bear has been sold under... He must have been the generic "cheap knockoff Teddy Ruxpin" at the time.. What is strange is, I had never seen any version of this bear for sale online until very recently, although I had seen a picture of Teddie Talkins once. Only recently have they started appearing... There is even one who was sold as a geniune Teddy Ruxpin, and another with Teddy Ruxpin tapes (which will not work properly). None of them are ever described as working at all, but neither was mine, and he still talks fine... I think it is because there is a trick to make him play.. If you press the play button before turning the switch, he will automatically stop and push it up again.. Sometimes he will do it even if you turn the switch first. You have to hold the play button down until you feel no resistance. This must be caused by poor design. Either the sellers can't figure this out, or they think he is a Teddy Ruxpin and ignore the obvious buttons... -_-
Now, the second bear I found:
Show Bear. I have never seen this one. There is no built in cassette player, only a cord to connect to a separate cassette player (like the original Douglas Fir talking trees). Like T.T Bear, he has a microphone.. I am not sure what it is used for in either bear. I think you can speak into it and they will move the eyes and mouth. It might be a recording function, but I am certain there is no such function in T.T Bear, who was slightly less cheaply made. However, the external cassette player may provide this function in Show Bear. The red LED heart in his chest is also indicative of such function. Speaking of T.T Bear, Show Bear's eyes look suspiciously similar to T.T Bear/Lucky Bear (and to Gabby Bear). In fact, T.T Bear, Gabby Bear and Show Bear and all the different names for those three, all have the same eyes!
Searching for Teddy Ruxpin knockoffs and "cheap alternatives" is fun! It reminds me of looking for Furby knockoffs. Seemingly endless variations, particularly odd ones, and one that were sold under different names with only minor differences.. I suppose they change the toy often to avoid lawsuits..
Earlier in this thread (or perhaps in my thread for Funny), there was a conversation about how knockoffs become more rare and valuable.. I would like to add, this is true for antique dolls as well. A copy of a famous dollmaker's dolls from a barely known dollmaker will become much more elusive (and very expensive). These vintage bears are the antiques of tomorrow, and in the future they will also become like that.. It makes me wish I could buy them now, as they will be much more expensive as the years pass..
(Although I should really get an actual Teddy Ruxpin for my collection first, haha)
