Okay, I had a silly question for Grundo today.
First a little background. It seems off-topic to the discussion, but I want to set it up.
I have been looking for employment for some time now. As luck would have it, a non chemistry related job landed in my lap back in April, handyman/custodian of the park, community center, pool and grounds where my parents live. (My problem has gotten so bad, I had to return home.) The really neat thing about the job is that the homeowners association board has people on it who I have known my entire life and who are good people. And when any odd job arises I usually get the first call and first dibs on the opportunity to make some more money.
This past weekend, Memorial Day Weekend for us in the United States, I was brought in to guard the gate and ensure that residents who wanted to swim in the pool handed over their pool Identification cards and signed in on our book. In the past it has been a problem with some of the rougher element in the neighborhood. It was a really slow weekend for the pool. On Saturday we had 7 people come in between 3PM and 8PM. Sunday there were 4 in the same time period. Memorial Day was only better because one of the Board Members rousted his family and got them to come up and get their identification cards made. It was nasty looking storm clouds all weekend long. Nasty enough that Houston had one of the worst floods in many years overnight between Memorial Day and the Following Tuesday. Thankfully, after a nail-biting few hours for my family, worrying if my 2008 Chevy Suburban and my Brother's 2009 Ford F-150 were going to get flooded, we were left relieved and could go to bed well after 3AM the other night.
Well this seems all irrelevant and some of it is I guess, I told you that to tell you, that While I was at the pool with many hours to sit and wait the clock with a handful of eager but bored Lifeguards, and I had many interesting discussions with them. For the first time in my life I truly felt old!!! Please laugh. I am laughing too. It is surprising to me that there are a whole crew of Lifeguards who look after our pool who were not even yet BORN when I graduated from High school!!! I could hardly imagine that. I still can barely imagine it. I look back and I wonder where the time went. Sometimes when I see the grey hairs in my hair it doesn't surprise me.
Another asked me a name of a band that was popular when I was a Senior in High School. I named a few I could remember: Fatboy Slim, Basement Jaxx, The Prodigy, LaBouche, Rednex, The Bucketheads and Daft Punk. It shocks me that they are all about 20 years old now!
Then there is stuff like Nirvana, Collective Soul, Stone Temple Pilots, Sound Garden, Pearl Jam. They are pushing 25.
The music I love so much is now 30 years old. Bands like Skid Row, Slaughter, Twisted Sister, Quiet Riot, Ratt. These are all 30 plus years old now. It is Classic Rock!
It leads me into my question: We have classic rock channels on the radio dial. Please do not misunderstand me, I have no problem with rock from the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's, It is good stuff. I have a handful of it. What I want to know is why is music from the 1970's not finally shelved and moved over from the Classic Rock channels to the Oldies channels? There is a whole decade of the 1980's that is going to be missed by this major omission. Hair metal is now Classic Rock. Stuff like Nirvana, Collective Soul, and Sound Garden are Classic Rock. Why hasn't the radio universe caught up to it?
It wouldn't matter anyway. I own it all already and I could run a channel 24-7 for 35 days without repeating a single track from my music library, but it would be cool to hear the Scorpions on Classic rock radio.
What do you think?
