Let me first state that the photos for Mother Goose on Dr. Eeyore's page are for the board in those without the turning neck. Now assuming that you just unplugged the tape player, you'll have a 4 wire plug from the tape head, a 3 wire plug, and two plugs with 2 wires, One of those is for the motor and that would plug in right next to the motor itself. Then the other 3 should be self evident. If you unplugged everything, that's another matter and I cannot recall how they line up on the board for the Mother Goose with 3 servos so I can't provide anything on that.. Maybe someone who has worked on one of these more recently can provide you with information. Once again for anyone undertaking a repair - always mark the plugs as you remove them. If you only unplugged the player and can get that back in proper order, and if you have cleaned the tape head and capstan and checked the belt, the drag problem could be caused by too much tension on the rubber wheel when it contacts the capstan. If the spring that pushes that wheel against the capstan does it too tightly, the tape will drag. You description seems to indicate that could be the case. The spring can be bent back until the tension is right. It is a case trial and error. On the other toys, I can usually test this by opening the tape door and closing it until the tape plays properly. If it will with the door open a bit but then drag when the door is fully closed, that's the problem. This can't be done with Mother Goose, however, with the design of the tape door. The tape is engaged by shutting the door that it slides into. If the door is not firmly shut, it will not play. That presents the question of whether the door is shutting properly to engage the tape and trigger the player in the first place. If you were putting in the tape and it played at times, but not at other times, that could be your primary problem. Check that the clear tape door is shutting properly and triggering the player. If there are any cracks in the plastic that cause problems with the positioning on the tape in the player, you will have to fix them or get a new plastic door. If you get the tape to run every time but still have it dragging, then an adjustment to the spring that tenses the rubber wheel may solve that. Read through this a few times as the explanation is sort of backwards as a bit complex. But Mother Goose has differences with the way the tape goes in, which is the case for both the moving and non- moving neck types.
