Hi all, I've been lurking for a long time now and have finally decided to join and post here, so yay! I recently acquired a Grubby in what looks to be a first generation box. The box itself shows the prototypes for both Teddy and Grubby on the back. I was curious if this box was the same throughout the entirety of Grubby's shelf life, and if not, if someone could verify whether or not I have the first generation of Grubby? I've seen folks mention in blueoctopede's youtube videos that there are two versions of Grubby at least, so I'm wondering if there's a visible difference between them? Also if this has been asked before, sorry! I've browsed through the forums a bit but not through every last thing.

It looks like you have a 2nd generation Grubby. You can tell by the battery cover. 1st generation Grubbys have sort of a latch to open their compartment, 2nd generations are like yours, and 3rd generations are like yours, but with hinges so that it doesn't fall off.
As for the prototypes on the box, they are all like that, and it remained like that throughout its shelf life.

Oh wow, I didn't know there were three generations! Was it possible he was being revised when they were changing Teddy (to the plastic tape player and then the hinged battery cover)? Does Grubby look or move differently between these generations?
I'm surprised the box stayed the same, too! How odd. Thanks for letting me know!

I've never owned a Grubby ever, I do own several original cassette based Teddy Ruxpins, 1st and 2nd generation versions. I understand that the battery covers on generation 1 Grubby toys broke very easily, apparently the latches snapped or something like that, can someone please clarify this? When you insert batteries into Grubby, do you insert them the same way as you do with Teddy? That is, do the batteries go in with the ends of the batteries visible like they do with Teddy, or do they go in with the side labels visible as they would with, say, a portable radio or tape recorder? I understand, although again I don't have one, that with Goofy, the batteries are inserted so the side labels that are wrapped around the batteries are visible when you open the battery door.

That might explain why there are so few of the 1st Gen Grubbys.
Mine's batteries go in normally like Teddy's do, with just the ends visible.

I don't know anything concerning the battery latch on the first generation Grubby as I've never seen one. But I do have 3 or 4 Grubbys and the batteries do go in just as they do with Teddy. On mine the battery door is the same design as with Teddy, with the later Grubby versions having the same hinge type door as well. The battery box in Goofy is quite different as you describe, and quite frankly presents difficulties with installing and changing the battieries. I seem to recall that Talking Julie (or maybe the Pamela doll...one uses C batteries while one uses A's and I think it is Pamela that uses the A batteries although in the same fashion as Teddy) has a similar battery box design but would have to check on that to be certain. But if I am correct the two sets of batteries in the Julie do not present the same problems in changing the batteries as is the case with Goofy.

The battery cover for 1st gen Grubby was rather different, and it did not look similar to other WoW battery compartments. The batteries themselve go in at same polarity and position as any other Grubby. Just the design itself, mainly of the cover, is different

Thanks for the replies! Does anyone have a picture of the 3rd Gen's hinge cover? I've seen the 1st Gen's latch on ebay but I've yet to see the hinged cover.

Hi! I have a silly question, what size battery goes into a grubby? I just bought 3 and would like to check if the work.

You mean like the hinges are smaller and on the opposite side of his tag?
