My primary interest with Teddy Ruxpin centers on WoW Teddies and other WoW toys, so I will preface these comments by stating that fact. I've never developed too much of an interest in the later versions of Teddy, although I had picked up both a Playskool Teddy (non working but repaired) and a YES Teddy as part of a couple of lots purchased. But having these two, I recently found a Backpack Teddy on an internet sale for 5 dollars. I bought him as I was curious to make comparisons. Despite some things I've read which would seem to indicate these guys are pretty fragile and breakable, this one works perfectly and made a good subject for comparison among the three. Both the Playskool and the YES Teddy are pretty comparable. Both seem to exhibit some limitation in the animatronic motion of their mouths, which the Backpack Teddy doesn't. Both Playskool and YES Teddy mouths work well enough, but don't really open very wide at any point as he speaks. Backpack Teddy's mouth just seems to work in a way that more closely resembles the original. It isn't a perfect image, but much better that the others, and very close to third generation or 2 serve WoW Teddies, and maybe even a bit better.. Yet all three of these small later Teddies seem to suffer from the same issue by comparison to the original, and that centers on the eyes. The eyes blink, but in building the animatronics system to work with a single servo, the operation of the eye in all appears mechanical. In my view (no pun intended) WoW Teddies have eye motion that appears far more natural than any of the later types. Now of course its the use of a separate and differently programmed eye servo that makes that possible in the WoW Teddies, and accordingly impossible in any of the other version.. Beyond issues of size, some minor changes in appearance, and the changes from tape cartridge, back to cassette and then to chip cartridge among them, in terms of the animatronics its the mechanical appearance of the eye motion in all three that makes them pale in comparison the originals, IMHO.
Given my observation of these three side by side with an original Teddy, I guess having examples isn't beyond my basic interest as in terms of a collection they tell part of the story. Its similar to having an example of Gabby Bear (and someday I may even find a tape for him to see whether mine actual does work or not.) But I can't think I'll ever develop any further interest in any of these guys. Of course I do believe that others here may have a different perspective, and I'd like to hear some of those opinions on any or all of these later Teddies, as it might add to or change my views.
