What do you guys know about this bear? I heard about him on youtube. He doesn't seem to be as cool as Teddy Ruxpin by any means, but I'd like to have him because I love tape player toys. Does he tell stories or just sing songs? From the vids I've seen, he seems to be more of a toy that would put kids to sleep than a cool storyteller like Teddy is. All the songs I've heard are really slow. What do you guys think?

My understanding from the articles that I've read about Spinoza Bear is that he's primarily intended for children with serious illnesses or who are in very difficult situations, and that the media made for them focusses on positive reinforcement and instilling self-worth, or on coping with things such as grieving. Relaxation also seems to be an aim, so I guess that explains why the songs you've heard are on the slow side! I don't know if stories accompany the songs, though. There's an article from 2008 about one here. This article implies that more recent Spinoza Bears use CD players - I assume, though, that the 1980s and 1990s models used tapes. It also mentions the pricing for them, as the article is about a group that raises money to donate them to hospitalised children. There's also a list of songs, and what they're about, on this page. Unfortunately, the official website seems to be down at the moment. For when it's back up, it's located at www.spinozabear.com - unfortunately it uses Adobe Flash for its content, though, which I'm pretty sure is against web accessibility guidelines (which seems perhaps a little ironic, given Spinoza's purpose...).

Ugh, Adobe Flash Player is all kinds of unaccessible for the blind community. This is kind of sad because tape player toys were popular with blind kids.
