I finally had the time to start watching through the Mill Creek DVD box-sets of The Adventures of Teddy Ruxpin, today, and it brought to mind a question which I think has been lurking at the back of my mind for a long time. It's rather trivial, but it's probably going to irritate me, otherwise! Does Grubby have a surname? I ask because Teddy frequently introduces himself and Gimmick by their full names, and plenty of other characters have full names, too, but Teddy almost always introduces Grubby with "this is my friend, Grubby", or something similar. Grubby stands out a bit because he doesn't seem to even *have* a last name.

Hmm, that's a major toughie. Grubby was always introduced as "Grubby the Octopede". But I never really thought about him even having a last name, or he might not like Cher or Sinbad.

I usually just defer to Grubby (the) Octopede. I follow the Species Surname rule, if no other surname is given.

Yeah, as far as I know, he has no surname. Even in the front of the books, he's simply marked "Grubby" as he was on his packaging. In the books and the series, he is always referred to as either "Grubby" or "Grubby the Octopede." If you notice, however, NONE of the Octopedes have surnames, as at the end of the series, when they meet Captain Zelza (Xelza?) and her daughter, Zena (not to be confused with Xena), they are all introduced by one name, including her entire crew. I wonder if it is simply a trait of their species to have no surname, because even after Grubby is reunited with his family, they never mention a surname, and in fact, Grubby's parents are simply referred to as "Mom and Dad," but I don't think Teddy or Gimmick ever address them by name.

Perhaps the Octopede species don't have surnames. Could be a culture thing.
Xena's name is spelled with a 'Z'? I've always seen it spelled with an 'X'.

I forget where I saw it. I used to spell it with an "X" (like the Warrior Princess...) but maybe I only used the "Z" to differentiate between the two.
I guess because there's no official document to say otherwise, either is plausible.

Perhaps the Octopede species don't have surnames. Could be a culture thing. The culture thing is what I'm leaning towards, if Grubby indeed doesn't officially have a surname (which it seems that he doesn't). It's the notion that I like the best, I think.

I have one of the original (at least AlchemyII/WoW era) drawings of Grubby with a description on the back. The original spelling of Octopede was "Octopeed" since that does appear to be the family name of the entire species... that must have required a lot of paperwork to complete

Ooh, I'm glad the species name was changed. The original would've been a rather unfortunate spelling.

I think Grubby had an accident. What makes you say that? He Octopeed. Yeah, that could've been bad.
