Nice. Now we've got that worked out. Lol. I guess we're all glad that Teddy has a family, because Teddy I might've flopped back in 1985 when it first came out, but it didn't so the franchise expanded to include three more variations of the toy and stories, the animatronic and the animated series. Not very many franchises have that much going for them.

Hi. I don't have eyesight to be able to see what the bears look like, but the one I remember seeing (I wasn't able to have one as a kid until very briefly in 1994) was in 1992. I have no idea which version he was because I don't know how long my friend had him, but if I felt him I would probably recognize him. I really want one of the 80s versions, though, preferably the one that plays regular cassette tapes.

That's the original Teddy Ruxpin that WoW released in 1985. He's the one that started it all. He's the one I own.

And the 1992 one is the Teddy II put out by Playskool. That's my Teddy.
He's a few inches smaller than the Teddy I, and his cassettes are more like 8-tracks.

Wow. I know my friend's Teddy could play regular tapes and so could the one I had briefly because we used to play music tapes in him.

There have been four companies that have produced Teddy Ruxpins over the years: Worlds of Wonder (WoW) produced the first Teddy Ruxpin as well as a later one that was smaller, Playskool produced the Teddy II, which has 8-track like tapes, Yes! Entertainment, which had cartridges for it's Teddy III, and finally, Backpack Toys, which also had MP3 cartridges, and the stories were expanded. So, there are lots of them around.

^ I'd like to add some small clarifications, if I may, please. WoW's smaller Teddy ("Teddy II") is essentially the same as PlaySkool's, except for some minor cosmetic differences. Also, Teddy III uses standard tapes, but he has the same animation system as Teddy II, so these tapes aren't compatible with Teddy I.

See, this is what happens when you don't own a Teddy III, you don't know what he uses to hold the stories within I feel so deprived now. Oh well, maybe the bookscans will help me get over that feeling.

Speaking of book-scans (and sorry to go off-topic for a moment!), I noticed a little artwork goof in the Teddy IV picture-book, Captured by Mudblups - as the Airship is leaving Leota behind, Teddy can be seen wearing not his standard tunic, but the Teddy III red shirt! It's like the reverse of the goof on the Teddy III cover for The Airship, where Teddy can be seen wearing his famous tunic, instead of his red shirt.

Really? Okay, that's weird. Maybe Backpack did it on purpose to vex the fans who weren't so thrilled with the Yes! Teddy? Mr. Isaacson, would you know anything about this?

My guess is that they simply forgot to re-touch the image that was previously redone for the Yes! books.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised. It's like in a few episodes of the animated Star Trek series, where they accidentally colored somebody's uniform tunic the wrong colour. Those kinds of mistakes actually made into the final production. Of course it was a Filmation production, and they're known for making those kinds of mistakes quite frequently.

I'm kind of confused. You said the Playschool version had special tapes, but I remember playing regular tapes on him. Does that mean my buddy had the 80s version or were they both able to play regular tapes too?

Then it wasn't the Teddy II version that you're referring to. I thought it was because you mentioned seeing it in '92, and Teddy II was the only version out at that time. At least, I think so.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Someone might've also have found a WoW Teddy at a garage sale or something like that, depending on how long the friend had it for. Most of my Teddy book and tape sets, plus my later WoW Teddy were found by my grandmother at garage sales. The only one that wasn't was my original WoW Teddy I, and The Airship book and tape set. Everything else, the books, the Grundo playmat, and my Tweeg figure all came from garage sales.
