My granddaughters WCT Teddy Ruxpin stared to develop "hiccups", i.e. started to stop in the middle of speaking and then restarting.
Since my daughter already ordered a new one, I decided to take a closer look at this teddy iteration.
The whole operating mechanism is in one piece of casing that sits partially in the belly and in the head. Almost all the electronics are in the head part. The belly only contains the batteries, speaker and some switching electronics. The servo that drives the mouth/nose sits behind the main circuit board and the eye LED is on top of the main circuit board. The servo motor drives two or three gears and operates the mouth/nose almost in identical fashion as the Playskol/Yes/Backpack version of Teddies had, a lever on the lat gear engages with a lever on the nose/mouth piece. There is a MicroSD card slot with a card on the main board. I believe it has all the program info on it.
I called WCT regarding what happens with your purchased extra stories if your Teddy breaks. WCT said there is no way to transfer purchases other than returning the broken Teddy to WCT. When you buy a new Teddy and connect it to a computer you can see all ten stories already loaded on the bear, when you buy extra stories you actuall do not download them only unlock it. Interesting concept. it almost excludes further stories to be added by the current app.
Next I will try whether transferring the MicroSD card will transfer the purchases to the new host.

Denes Hi there! Just curious, have you attempted to do anything with the SD card yet? It would be interesting if you could put in your own SD card with music on it... Or audio books. Also, for the mouth mechanism were there any rubber drive belts in the head or was it all just gears and levers associated with the motor?

So you're saying you have to re-purchase the stories if you get a new Teddy? I think they need to fix that ASAP.

They could have you create an account so you can log in and retrieve your stories, but then that would make Teddy too high-tech so I guess that wouldn't work. How much are the stories?

Oh I'm glad to know that. I like WCT Teddy as he is, I wouldn't want to have them rework him. I will be downloading the app as soon as I get access to my Teddy, but if the app isn't accessible, will I be able to buy stories from the website itself or am I out of luck there? Also, when I get the new stories, will he play them without being hooked to the app? I don't think I will ever need to hook him to the app unless I'm getting new stories unless that would effect how he plays without the app. I can't see so I don't need to have the words displayed, I just want to hear him.

The app is totally inaccessible. As Far as I know, it is the only way to get new stories. You do have to download the 2018 story files from the website if you want them but still need to buy them on the app. After that, you won't need the app until more stories are released. They will play without it. The app is only for getting new stories and reading along.

Aww man that stinks about the inaccessibility. I wonder if there is a way to contact WCT when I'm ready to buy the stories.

Thanks. I will definitely do that as soon as I get access to my Teddy and try to get the new stories.
