This isn't related to TR as much as it is just life in general and the old bald cheater we call time, but it does tie in so I thought I would exercise my fingers and post. Geocities closed today.. for those of you who may not be familiar, that was the original "MySpace" and "Facebook" , the place to be on the Internet back in the 90's. On a hot August day in 1998, My 14 year old self was growing tired with the other adventures of summer and my growing fascination with the internet led me to open an account. I never really thought I'd get it off the ground, it seemed very complicated. After messing around with it just a little bit, I finally had enough knowledge to actually publish something and the first thing I thought of was making a page for Teddy. It started very simple and with borrowed graphics. Mathue from the TRFAQ and Creed Stonegate, who's TR page was more devoted to the TV series and has been gone a long time now, helped me out and before long I was actually getting visitors and making new friends, the start of what is our little community today was really established during that time period. The next year, Yahoo acquired GeoCities and I didn't like the format changes they made, so I moved to Tripod. The site was in various states of functionality and disarray while there and in '06 I finally packed up and moved it to it's own domain. The site is at by far it's best at the moment, but I have always missed those early days at GeoCities. Maybe it was just the rose colored glasses of youth, but that whole time period seems a bit magical looking back, just not that long ago at all the world seemed much more innocent.
So I logged back into the old account last night to make sure I archived everything I could. There wasn't a lot left, the fifteen year old me had no idea how sentimental the twenty five year old version would become and I deleted a bunch of things, but what was there reminded me of what a journey this has been. Ken Forsse said if a a dream was a good one, it might come true and so many of mine have in a domino effect that started by creating that account at GeoCities. If you would have told me when I was 2 that someday I would be talking to Teddy Ruxpin on the phone, or meeting my childhood hero- the creator and writer- I wouldn't have believed you, and a few simple keystrokes made it all happen. So, I'm a little reminiscent today and also a little inspired, and also a little sad that the world can't leave well enough alone, because there are a ton of those original GeoCities websites that will fade into eternity now, another little lost piece of late 20th century Americana.
